Developmental delay means a child is not reaching expected milestones — in speech, movement, social skills, or thinking — at the typical age. It does not mean a child will never catch up. With early support, many children close the gap significantly. The key is catching it early.

Causes vary widely and are not always known. Common factors include premature birth, genetic conditions (such as Down syndrome), hearing or vision problems, lead exposure, brain injury, or limited early stimulation. In many cases, no single cause is identified — and that is okay. What matters most is getting the right support in place.
Trust your instincts. Parents are often the first to notice something is different. If you have any concern, bring it up at your child's next well-child visit — or book a dedicated developmental screening appointment. Do not wait for the next scheduled checkup if you are worried now.
